An independent scientific ecosystem dedicated to seismic intelligence, earthquake engineering, computational mechanics, Earth-system monitoring, and interdisciplinary innovation — operating today as an advanced think tank for the future of civilization.
THEK Research Institute is an independent scientific and technological think tank — generating original knowledge, developing new conceptual frameworks, producing scientific intelligence, and connecting disciplines that institutional science rarely bridges.
Founded and directed by M.Sc (TUM). Marcelo Moncayo Theurer — Civil Engineer with a Master's degree in Computational Mechanics from the Technical University Munich (TU München), and postgraduate specialization in earthquake-resistant design at BRI-IISEE, Japan, and the University of Tokyo. Moncayo is Titular Professor at the Universidad de Guayaquil, where he teaches seismic modeling and directs research groups in structural dynamics and computational engineering. THEK is the institutional crystallization of more than 25 years of independent work across structural dynamics, earthquake engineering, seismic-resistant structural design, finite element methods, numerical methods, computational mechanics, scientific programming, and Earth-system analysis.
As a think tank, THEK does not merely apply existing knowledge — it actively develops new mathematical frameworks, builds computational models, synthesizes cross-disciplinary intelligence, and produces scientific tools accessible to researchers, engineers, and institutions worldwide. Moncayo also works as a science communicator, keynote speaker and conference presenter, bringing complex scientific ideas to broader audiences through lectures, divulgation content, and interdisciplinary education.
"The sciences do not try to explain, they hardly even try to interpret, they mainly make models. By a model is meant a mathematical construct which, with the addition of certain verbal interpretations, describes observed phenomena. The justification of such a mathematical construct is solely and precisely that it is expected to work."
THEK operates across eight interconnected activity domains — from original research and scientific software to education, divulgation, and AI-powered systems.
Original research in earthquake engineering, seismic-resistant structural design, structural dynamics, finite element methods, and numerical simulation of complex physical systems.
